Everyone who ever held office in Europe, in one table.

Political history is written about individuals. It is rarely queryable as a population. The Long Register is a single open dataset of every recorded political mandate in the 47 states of geographic Europe — from each state's foundation, taken literally, to the government sitting today.

Version 1.0.0 · data released 2026-09-01 · page rebuilt 2026-09-01 · refreshed monthly

Mandates beginning in each five-year span, 600–2026, log scale. Every bar is people stepping into office: consuls, doges, ministers, deputies. The register runs thin before print and thick after mass politics — the gaps are the record's gaps, not history's.
Share of national mandates held by women, by decade of taking office. The sliver before 1907 is inheritance, not election — queens regnant and consorts, empresses, hereditary seats — until Finland seats the first women in Europe ever elected to a national assembly. The 2020s are still being written.

What this is

One row per mandate — person × office × term — so “who governed Poland in 1935?” is a query, not a research project. Every row cites its Wikidata source. The historical predecessor states that “since the birth of the country” actually requires are in scope: the Kingdom of England, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, Austria–Hungary, the USSR, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia — 350 dissolved polities in all.

Who is in it, concretely

The longest single premierships in the register, as recorded in v1.0.0 — every name links to its Wikidata entity, which is the row's cited source:
